007 First Light’s tutorial offers an extensive 3-hour training montage filled with agent camaraderie.
You can’t have a proper origin story without a training montage, and that’s just the way it goes, even for future MI6 agent James Bond. I was bracing myself for the typical “press the thumbstick to crouch” and “here’s how to throw a punch” tutorials, but 007 First Light takes it up a notch by putting you through a rigorous Bond boot camp that lasts a solid three hours.
When I finally thought I had wrapped up the tutorial segment and then heard “advanced training,” I might have let out an audible groan. But don’t let my frustration deter you; I’ll break down the tutorial missions, what to expect from each, and how long they took me to complete so you can prepare yourself.
Here’s the rundown of the main tutorial missions in 007 First Light. There are additional named chapters that involve some walking and talking, plus a visit to Q branch, but the four tutorial missions listed below are where most of the action happens.
|
Mission Title |
Time |
Description |
|---|---|---|
|
Against The Odds |
40 mins |
Learn the basics of stealth and movement as soldier Bond accidentally winds up in contact with MI6 on a mission gone sideways. |
|
The Needle’s Eye |
30 mins |
This is the actual montage-y training portion with combat, driving, and gunplay as James meets his fellow 00 recruits at a Malta training compound. |
|
A New Home |
30 mins |
Bond goes into advanced training, so this portion is mostly two separate capture the flag stealth and combat sequences in Malta mixed with some trainee agent team building time. |
|
A Night Out |
30 mins |
IOI’s obligatory nightclub level which plays mostly like a real mission: tailing leads, making choices, and using gadgets, though still holding your hand a bit. |
While the overall time for the training segment is quite lengthy, I didn’t mind it too much—though some others on the team had a different experience, so your mileage may vary. The interactive montage segment in The Needle’s Eye, where Bond first hits Malta, was particularly enjoyable to play through.
You might find that A New Home takes you longer to finish than it did for me. By that point, I was a bit tired of Malta, so when I was thrown back into another daytime capture-the-flag scenario, I admit I may have opted for a brawl instead of the stealth approach I was supposed to use. A little rebellious spirit? Seems like James and I have that in common.
After you navigate the nightclub mission, you’ll finally be sent out on your first real assignment. This is the mission showcased in the gameplay reveal, where James is less than thrilled about being assigned a chauffeur cover story while the team of soon-to-be 00 agents scopes out the castle-like Carpathian hotel in Slovakia. Almost there, James—you’re on the brink of becoming a real agent.
We’ll have a full review of 007 First Light coming your way once we’ve had the chance to play through the entire game, but we just got our hands on it yesterday.
