A Guide to Catching Panthalus, the Latest Legendary Pal in Palworld

Catching Panthalus isn’t something you’ll tackle right away in Palworld. Like many legendary pals, this newly introduced giant whale presents a challenging battle, and you’ll need to complete a quest before you can even confront it.

You can start the Panthalus quest after encountering the new tower boss introduced in version 1.0, but you can also initiate it at any time by visiting the Ancient Civilization Researcher located on the Deserted Islet. This means that if you’re strong enough, you can take on Panthalus even if you haven’t made much progress with the towers.

To engage Panthalus, you first need to unlock its boss fight on the Deserted Islet, which is situated north of the Windswept Hills and just above the Twilight Dunes. It’s easy to locate, as it’s positioned right in the channel between Ice Wind Island on the left and the ruins at the southern tip of the Astral Mountains on the right.

Here, you’ll find the Ancient Civilization Researcher, who will task you with collecting four bones scattered across the map, kicking off the Panthalus quest. There are no specific requirements to access this quest aside from reaching the researcher, but be warned—Panthalus is a formidable opponent.

You don’t have to unlock the quest to gather the bones; you can collect all four and then speak to the Ancient Civilization Researcher afterward, giving you the freedom to choose your own order of operations.

The first bone is located on the skull of a giant whale skeleton to the west of your starting point in the Windswept Hills. It’s quite visible from a distance due to its glowing light, so just fly over and head west along the skeleton to the skull to grab it.

The second bone can be found northeast of the Windswept Hills, east of the Verdant Brook, and northwest of Eastern Wild Island, near where the Level 55 Jormuntide resides. Again, look for a giant whale skeleton.

To find it, fast travel to the Altar of the Windcaller, then head south across the water, over the ribcage (and past the Jormuntide), to spot the glowing item resting on a lower section of bone at the back.

The third bone is located far to the west of the Windswept Hills, towards the center of Mount Obsidian. You’ll need Level 2 Heat Resistance for this area, so equip the Tropical Outfit or Heat Resistant Pelt Armor and keep your fire pals tucked away.

Travel to the Eternal Pyre Tower Entrance fast travel point, then head directly east over the cliff edge to find the giant skeleton on the right side of the lava pools below. The bone is nestled inside the skull, which is on the side of the skeleton closest to you.

The final bone is found in the northern part of the Astral Mountains, which are situated far north of the Windswept Hills. If you’ve already unlocked the Deserted Islet where the Ancient Civilization Researcher is, you can head there and continue north. Make sure to bring at least Level 2 Cold Resistance for this icy region.

From the Land of Absolute Zero fast travel point, go west over the cliff and down into the frozen lake, where you’ll see the head of the giant skeleton and the glowing item on top of it.

Now, return to the Ancient Civilization Researcher on the Deserted Islet. If this is your first interaction with them, you’ll need to accept the quest first and then speak to them again. This will reward you with the Faded Schematic, which you can use to craft the Echoing Flute at any workbench using the four bones you’ve collected.

After crafting the flute, head back to the researcher, talk to them, and interact with the glowing symbols on the nearby stone to unlock the Panthalus boss fight.

As with any legendary pal, Panthalus is a tough challenge. You can also receive this quest after defeating the latest tower boss, so it’s not something you’re expected to handle early on. You have a strict ten-minute time limit to defeat it. Equip strong gear like a Plasma Cannon or Multi Guided Missile Launcher, and most importantly, bring a high-level, fast-flying pal to ride during the battle.

The entire arena for Panthalus is water, except for a small island, so land-based pals will struggle. Being able to fly quickly will help you dodge most of its attacks. Once you whittle down Panthalus’s health, it will collapse, giving you a chance to catch it with a sphere—this is guaranteed, so you can focus on the fight knowing you’ll successfully capture this legendary pal at the end.
