In Avowed, the Cabin Fever side quest kicks off early in your journey when you meet a woman struggling with a xaurip infestation. These reptilian rogues have taken over Dehengen’s cabin, but there’s more to this side quest than meets the eye, as the xaurips seem particularly attached to Dehengen. While this quest is primarily an investigation, it culminates in a choice that impacts the outcome, so here’s how to secure the best ending for the Cabin Fever side quest.

To achieve the best ending, you need to persuade Dehengen to spend time with the xaurip that appears to hold the other half of her soul. Choose the dialogue option, “Spend time with the xaurip. It could be the only way you ever find peace.” However, keep in mind that if you’ve already found and defeated Tazaraak, the non-hostile xaurip chief near Dehengen’s cabin, you won’t be able to reach this ending.

Convincing Dehengen to connect with the xaurip nets you 291 XP and the unique Vindictive Band ring. This ring enhances your Critical Hits in combat by adding poison damage, providing a solid boost early on and potentially benefiting your build later if you have the right attributes. After completing the Cabin Fever quest, the log indicates that Dehengen and the xaurip warchief are learning to coexist peacefully, suggesting a happy resolution, though I haven’t been able to locate them for any follow-up dialogue.

If you choose not to encourage her to spend time with the xaurip, or actively dissuade her, she’ll feel disheartened about the lack of meaning in her life but will still appreciate your assistance. In this case, you’ll only receive the 291 XP without the unique ring. The quest log will state that Dehengen moves to the Paradis Shantytown to start anew, but again, I couldn’t find her there for any follow-up conversations. Some choices in quests can lead to future encounters, such as the early decision to either free Ilora or leave her in the fort prison, as she may reappear in a later side quest.
