Curious about that intriguing medieval zombie game revealed a couple of years ago? Blight: Survival combines elements from Plague Tale, Hunt: Showdown, and Hood: Outlaws and Legends, immersing you in an alternate 14th-century Europe where the Black Death has morphed into a zombie plague.
You’ll lead a team of up to four armored warriors through infected landscapes, battling zombified peasants and ruthless bandits with an arsenal of medieval weaponry, all in a quest to confront the blight and cleanse the land of its corruption.
While the game is still in early development, I’ve gathered key insights from ongoing FAQs that paint a clearer picture of its progress.
As stated in the Discord FAQ: “The simple answer is it’s too early to tell.” Despite being revealed nearly three years ago, the game is still in its formative stages.
Creative director Ulrik Langvandsbråten shared insights on the development timeline in a trailer celebrating over 1.5 million Steam wishlists:
“We’re taking the time to ensure that when Blight is finally in your hands, it will be worth the wait,” Langvandsbråten explains. “When we partnered with Behaviour, we realized that to truly honor the original vision for Blight, we needed to step back and rebuild our core systems from scratch.”
This means combat has undergone significant changes since the developers collaborated with Behaviour Interactive, known for creating Dead by Daylight.
“Combat is meant to be felt. From the first clash to the final deadly blow,” says Ash Pannell, senior creative director at Behaviour Interactive. “This includes executing lethal finishers, which are just one aspect of our immersive combat system.”
I suppose I can hold off a bit longer to smash zombies if it means the experience will be even more satisfying. *Sigh* The struggle of being an impatient gamer is real.
There will be limited playtests for Blight: Survival, but they will be invitation-only. If you want a chance to play early and provide feedback (along with some unspecified “rewards”), you can sign up for the playtests on their website.
Keep in mind that signing up may also involve testing other titles from Behaviour Interactive.
So far, only three videos have been released for Blight: Survival. The first is the gameplay reveal trailer, which gave us an early look at the game two years ago. The second, from April 2025, showcases a character navigating the Marshlands, one of the planned biomes. The third is a teaser highlighting the game’s environments, featuring a menacing enemy at the end.
After watching the reveal trailer, you might be wondering what Blight: Survival actually entails in terms of gameplay. The developers describe it as a “coop extraction-lite with roguelite elements,” which suggests you’ll embark on missions with other players, gather loot like weapons, armor, and crafting materials, and return to your hub camp. There, you can use those resources to craft and upgrade as your camp evolves.
Your main objective in Blight is to eradicate the Blight itself—a plague transmitted through spores and bodily fluids that has turned the inhabitants into mindless zombies. You’ll also face bandits, and the game will feature humanoid bosses, maintaining a realistic style without fantasy elements. Additionally, you can make offerings at shrines, as shown in the reveal trailer, likely to gain buffs.
According to the official FAQ, Blight: Survival will not be an open-world game; instead, it will feature mission-based maps. The extent of exploration is still unclear, but the developers indicate that the main storyline should take around 25 hours to complete (though this may change during development), with opportunities to continue playing afterward.
Set in an alternate history of 14th-century Europe (similar to how Hunt: Showdown incorporates zombies and demons in its setting), the developers are “taking artistic liberties” with the portrayal of armor and combat, aiming to include all weapons that were historically used during that time.
The combat is described as a “hybrid between Dark Souls and Mount and Blade.” Here are some key details about how it will function:
You can team up with up to four players, whether you prefer to go solo or in groups of two, three, or four. Here are the essential details:
