Discovering the Sphinx in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Where to Find It and Solve Its Riddles

This guide to the Sphinx puzzle in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey covers all the answers and essential details you need to tackle the Lore of the Sphinx questline.

Unlike other mythical creatures in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey that you battle, the Sphinx requires a different approach: a conversation filled with riddles. If you haven’t encountered her yet, make your way to the Southern Banks of Lake Kopais in Boeotia and prepare for some brain teasers. Read on for our comprehensive guide to ensure you ace those riddles.

Finding the Sphinx is a bit unconventional since there’s no side quest leading you to her. After discovering Atlantis and having a chat with your father, you’ll receive the Lore of the Sphinx quest, which is locked until you reach Level 35, along with half of a medallion. When you’re ready, head to the Strange Ruins located in the southern part of Lake Kopais. You can’t miss them, thanks to the striking Isu architecture and the imposing Sphinx statue at the center.

Talk to Gorgias, who’s hanging around in the mist, and he’ll help you locate the other half of the medallion. His apprentice, Pibos, was searching for it and was last seen at the Tomb of Menoikeus in the northeast of the Scorched Rolling Plains.

Once you arrive, you’ll find Pibos’ body alongside a dead cow. It seems the creature that took him out also devoured the medallion, so you’ll need to take down the Alpha lion that resides there. If you’re lucky, it might already be dead, and you can grab the other half of the Sphinx Medallion.

Return to the Strange Ruins to place the medallion in the statue, but you’ll find both Gorgias and the statue have vanished.

At this point, the Sphinx will reveal her true form. Instead of gearing up for a fierce battle, you’ll need to answer three riddles correctly to entertain her.

Here are the riddles we faced, along with the bold answers we provided:

1. **Question:** At night they come without being fetched, and by day they are lost without being stolen.
**Answer:** The Stars.

2. **Question:** As small as your thumb, I am light in the air, you may hear me before you see me, but trust that I’m there.
**Answer:** A hummingbird.

3. **Question:** What can run but never walk, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, has a bed but never sleeps?
**Answer:** A river.

You’ll need to press the panels on the pillars surrounding the Sphinx that correspond to your answers. If your answer doesn’t show up, don’t worry—just try one of the other options. For instance, while our answer of bumblebee wasn’t an option, hummingbird was, and another player found a correct answer for a riddle about jellyfish but only had a fish panel available. It’s a bit of a guessing game, so be prepared.

Choose wisely, as a correct answer leads to the Sphinx’s defeat, while a wrong one spells your doom. Fortunately, we nailed the answers on our first try and scored a hidden Piece of Eden disguised as a golden feather.

For taking her down, you’ll earn a Legendary Sphinx figurehead for your ship and the Epic Heavy Blunt Mace of the Sphinx.
