After mastering the basics of card-slinging your way up the tower in singleplayer, it’s time to explore how multiplayer works in Slay the Spire 2. It’s not overly complex, but I was surprised to see co-op added to this deckbuilding roguelite, making Mega Crit’s vision clearer than ever.

I’ve been having a blast deckbuilding and strategizing with friends, and I’m pleased to say that multiplayer feels familiar and engaging, just like solo runs. If you’re ready to team up, here’s a breakdown of how Slay the Spire 2 multiplayer operates, including how to kick off a co-op game and the system changes involved.

To start a co-op game in Slay the Spire 2, one player acts as the Host and creates a multiplayer save, allowing up to three others to join via the main menu. The Host must be friends with everyone on Steam; there are no password-protected lobbies or matchmaking systems.

Currently, local co-op isn’t available, but I’m hopeful for that feature since the game is still in early access. Setting up a multiplayer game in Slay the Spire 2 is straightforward.

That’s all you need to get started, but keep in mind that co-op mode introduces some differences in gameplay. It’s not overly complicated, but there are a few key points to remember regarding multiplayer saves and how certain mechanics shift.

Before embarking on a new climb, I recommend a quick review of how co-op save files function in Slay the Spire 2. Some details may seem obvious, but I learned the hard way that you can’t substitute players mid-campaign if someone drops out.

Think of Slay the Spire 2 multiplayer campaigns like a traditional RPG party: you’re a team of individuals moving together. You’ll face decisions as a group (like whether to go right or left), but each player maintains their own inventory, gold, and personal choices.

That’s the overall view, but here are some specific rules for Slay the Spire 2 multiplayer:

The Ascension progression in Slay the Spire 2’s multiplayer is distinct from any modifiers you’ve unlocked in singleplayer. You’ll need to start fresh, but the process for unlocking Ascension levels in multiplayer remains the same: complete all three acts as a team of 2-4 players.
