Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: What We Know About the Final Chapter of the Remake Trilogy

We were first introduced to the chaotic flow of time in Remake, and then we faced Sephiroth in his unforgettable encounter in Rebirth. Now, it’s time to bring this epic saga to a close. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation marks the third and final chapter in Square Enix’s remake trilogy, and early glimpses suggest it’s packed with all the nostalgic moments fans have been waiting for. Following its reveal at the Summer Game Fest, Square Enix has been open with interviews and lore insights, so here’s everything we know so far about Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

Final Fantasy was my gateway into the world of RPGs, and it’s likely why I’m here discussing games today. I’m genuinely impressed by how much Square Enix has revealed about Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and I’m eager to see if they can deliver a satisfying conclusion. Will Revelation play it safe and adhere closely to the familiar FF7 narrative? Or will it venture into new territory with its altered timeline?

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to launch in spring 2027, although a specific date hasn’t been confirmed yet. This installment will also be the first in the trilogy to release on all platforms simultaneously, including PC.

While there are no PC store pages available yet, we know Revelation will be accessible on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox for PC, meaning no exclusivity deals this time around.

As the mainline series moves further away from turn-based combat, it’s refreshing to see Final Fantasy 7 reaffirm its commitment to the series’ roots. While it’s not entirely turn-based, the tactical hybrid battle system returns, allowing players to pause the action and strategize.

From the trailers and interviews, it seems likely that Revelation will wrap up the trilogy by following the same major plot points as the original. However, the focus will be on the choices we make along the way and the alternate timelines that Sephiroth enjoys tormenting Cloud and the team with.

When all is said and done, I don’t anticipate any significant changes to the original story regarding who lives or dies or the planet’s fate.

While Hamaguchi has been somewhat vague on specifics, it appears that Revelation will pick up right where Rebirth left off—no time skips or omissions from the original PS1 game. In an interview, Hamaguchi mentioned that Rebirth concludes in the Forgotten City, and the original RPG then transitions to the Icicle Inn.

As for the state of the world, we know Meteor has been summoned, which spells trouble. The planet is understandably furious about the chaos, prompting the Weapons to awaken and respond to perceived threats.

It sounds like piloting the Highwind will grant us access to the entire planet, though story elements will likely restrict entry to certain areas in Revelation. Expect to revisit familiar locations like Midgar and Gongaga, along with some new spots.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will not feature multiple endings. In an interview, Hamaguchi confirmed that while players will make choices that influence the story, the trilogy will conclude with a “singular ending.” Although our journeys to the finale may differ, they will all lead to the same conclusion.

Deep down, you already know how this will unfold.
