Gothic Remake: Tips to Manage Your Torch Since You Can’t Stow It

One of the first things you’ll notice in Gothic Remake is just how frustrating the torch system can be. When you activate a torch from your hotbar, it lights up, which is great for navigating the game’s often dark environments. However, once it’s lit, there’s no way to put it back in your inventory.

If you switch to a sword, for instance, you can stab the torch into the ground, where it will burn for a while. You can either pick it back up later or let it burn out. While it’s pretty cool to stab a torch into the ground in a cave and then draw your sword to take on a horde of goblins, it can be a hassle during exploration.

There’s simply no key or input to stow a lit torch. The only way to put it away is to walk into water and start swimming, which extinguishes the flame. Otherwise, you’re left waiting for it to burn out before you can collect it again. There are a couple of useful exceptions, though.

Fortunately, torches are abundant, especially in areas where you really need them, so you don’t have to stress too much about using them. I usually make it a point to stab a torch into the ground along paths I plan to traverse multiple times, like the route to the Swamp Camp. This way, I can easily spot it later when it’s extinguished and pick it up again.

I also suggest setting your torch to slot 0 in the hotbar. This minimizes the chances of accidentally pulling one out and being unable to stow it, which definitely happened to me early in the game.

Hopefully, Alkimia Interactive recognizes how annoying this mechanic can be, even if it’s meant to add realism, and considers adding a way to stow torches in the future or at least an option to extinguish them on the ground so we can retrieve them without waiting.
