In Avowed, you’ll encounter all your companions throughout the main quest, each bringing unique abilities to enhance your combat experience. From powerful gunfire and explosive magic to entangling vines and supportive spells, these four companions can significantly improve your Avowed build. However, you can only take two companions with you at a time, and if you’re exploring extensively, it might take a while to find some of them.
Beyond combat, your allies from the Living Lands will assist in exploration by revealing secrets, clearing obstacles, and occasionally chiming in during conversations. Just don’t expect any romantic entanglements. Here’s everything you need to know about the companions in Avowed, including how to recruit them and their abilities.
There are four companions in Avowed: Kai, Marius, Giatta, and Yatzli. You can recruit them as you progress through the main quest. While you can’t miss any of them, your journey may lead you to some companions later than others based on your choices.
Once a companion joins your party, you can level them up to unlock and enhance their combat and exploration skills. This is managed through the Companion abilities tab, though leveling can be a slow process! Each companion has three active skills and one passive ability, with three upgrades available for each. You can assign any active ability to the quick actions on the D-pad, and all abilities can be accessed via the action radial by pressing LB.
Three of the companions also have environmental interaction commands, which can be handy if you lack the means to perform certain actions yourself. For instance, Kai’s Firestarter command allows him to burn away vines and webs if you can’t do it with a fire spell or weapon.
When you rest at an Avowed camp, you can chat with your companions to learn more about them, and they might even offer to teach you something, granting a permanent buff to some of your Avowed Attributes. And just to clarify, there’s no romance with the companions—sort of.
When you’re ready to leave camp, you’ll need to assemble your party, which is limited to three members: you and two companions. Choose wisely who to leave behind. Remember, camps serve as fast travel points, so if you want to switch up your party, you can easily return to a camp, swap companions, and then fast travel back to your previous location with a new team.
With that, here’s a closer look at each companion in Avowed:
Kai, the sturdy blue auamaua fishman, is the first companion you’ll recruit. He serves as a distraction tank, drawing enemy attention and stunning foes to make them easier to defeat. His durability makes him a valuable asset in any party, especially for ranged builds and fragile spellcasters.
Marius, the mountain dwarf explorer and survivalist, acts as the party ranger. He uses his bow to deal damage from a distance and can deploy crowd-control abilities and lethal attacks to support the team. He’s particularly useful for melee-focused builds.
Giatta, the animancer, is the party’s support wizard, capable of casting spells that buff allies and debuff enemies. She fits well into any party composition, though she’s less critical if you have plenty of consumables for buffs and healing.
Yatzli is a scholarly wizard who unleashes destructive spells in combat, though her magic lacks elemental effects. She’s more of a glass cannon, so pairing her with a strong melee build will help her thrive.
All four companions in Avowed provide significant advantages, and finding the right mix to complement your build will help you tackle combat challenges with ease. For even more buffs, seek out and collect totems scattered across the various regions, such as the Avowed Totem of Rightful Rulership and the Avowed Totem of Defiance.
