Mining the Petrified Gammeltroll in Valheim: A Step-by-Step Guide

Have you encountered the Gammeltroll in Valheim 1.0? If you’ve ventured into the game’s final biome, the Deep North, you’ve likely faced this towering foe. Standing at a staggering 30 feet, the Gammeltroll hurls tree trunks at you from a distance and can crush you if you get too close.

What’s particularly intriguing is that upon defeating the Gammeltroll, it doesn’t simply fall over. Instead, it transforms into a statue known as the “Petrified Gammeltroll.” You can chip away at its legs all you want, but even the strongest pickaxe in the game won’t leave a mark. As you might expect, hidden within the Gammeltroll is a vital new resource necessary for conquering the icy biome. So, how do you extract it?

The secret to breaking down the petrified Gammeltroll involves resources from the previous biome, the Ashlands, along with a new item found in the Deep North.

First, gather ember charges. Equip them and toss them at the petrified Gammeltroll, ideally aiming for its ankles from close range before making a quick escape. With this strategy, you only need two ember charges—one for each ankle—to shatter the statue.

(Note: Using ember charges against a living Gammeltroll isn’t recommended. While it will inflict some damage, it’s not worth the effort.)

Once the troll crumbles into debris, you can collect your new resource: Petrified Tissue! Just a heads up, it’s quite heavy, so you won’t be able to carry much at once, and it can only pass through stone portals, not wooden ones. Back at your base, toss it into your blast furnace and see what you can create!
