“Navigating the Open World of Ghost of Yotei: A Lesson in Exploration”

In Ghost of Yotei, you’ll find a vast world teeming with exploration opportunities, divided into several expansive open areas filled with intriguing clues. From the sight of uniquely colored trees in the distance to the inviting columns of steam or smoke, the environment beckons you to uncover its secrets.

Wandering through the plains is a captivating experience, but it can lead to some missed connections if you overlook certain environmental hints. This is especially true since much of your character’s growth hinges on discovering hot springs and altars that provide various stat boosts.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned from my time in Yotei is the importance of knowing where to find everything. While there are helpful birds to guide you, purchasable maps, and NPCs offering hints, I often found myself unaware of the significance of certain items for longer than I should have.

While the game offers plenty of information about skills, weapons, and the usual mechanics, mastering the locations of essential items is what I wish I had grasped sooner. Once you have that knowledge, you gain much more control over leveling up and mastering the diverse weapons at your disposal for revenge. Here’s what I know now that I wish I had understood from the start.

For a solid foundation as you dive into the game, these tips for Ghost of Yotei cover many of the basics. The game is so open and free that it’s easy to overlook important elements until you’ve invested hours, so be sure to stay aware.

One of the first things to note is the choice of your animal companion at the beginning, which you’ll have for the entire game. No pressure, right? Additionally, there are black bars that appear while riding, which can be disabled if you prefer a more traditional view.

As you embark on your journey, you might be curious about the game’s length. Spoiler alert: with this level of freedom, the duration can vary significantly.

You can unlock six different weapons in Ghost of Yotei, offering a mix of quick-fire and throwable options to keep combat fresh. The best part? You can explore and unlock everything before even touching the main storyline. It feels like it should be gated by the plot, but all you need to do is access the relevant areas to pursue whatever you desire.

While gathering your gear, accumulating as much in-game currency as possible is crucial for upgrades. Some upgrades are tied to the story, so it’s wise to know when to invest in enhancements and when to hold off—especially since gun parts are a late-game resource that can limit your final upgrades.

Lastly, I wish I had discovered the Undying Armor earlier in the game. This powerful gear can be obtained relatively early and provides a solid boost, even though you’ll eventually find better equipment.

Understanding the locations and functions of various items in the world is something I wish I had learned sooner, as your abilities are enhanced by finding specific items during your exploration. The Altars of Reflection allow you to upgrade your core abilities when you find and pray at them, granting points that can be allocated across a variety of skills, powers, and weapons. Knowing which skills to prioritize for upgrades is incredibly beneficial.

Additionally, make sure to locate all the hot springs, as each one you discover and use will increase your health. Given the lengthy battles in Yotei, having more endurance is always advantageous.

Finally, keep an eye out for the elusive wolf dens. These can be tricky to find since your wolf companion is introduced gradually and often appears randomly. The dens themselves are easy to miss, often just small rocky hills with trees that blend into the landscape until you start recognizing their shapes from different angles.
