Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic—What to Expect from Our Journey Back to a Galaxy Far, Far Away

After 21 long years, a new chapter in the Knights of the Old Republic saga is on the horizon with Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Although the game is still in the early stages of development, the cinematic trailer unveiled at the Game Awards has sparked excitement among fans of the franchise, even without a specific release date in sight.

Returning to the helm is Casey Hudson, the original director of Knights of the Old Republic, now leading the project at his newly established Arcanaut Studios. Hudson has a storied history in the gaming world, having directed iconic sci-fi RPGs like the beloved Mass Effect series during his time at BioWare.

While the trailer doesn’t reveal much, an official interview has shed light on the game’s direction and the developers’ vision. Hudson has indicated that they are still in the early phases of development, facing numerous challenges ahead. He mentioned, “We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead,” but reassured fans that they will share more updates as soon as possible. This suggests that we might be waiting a couple of years, with a potential release around 2027 or 2028.

Hudson did promise that Fate of the Old Republic will launch before 2030, humorously noting, “I’m not getting any younger!” His comments came in response to speculation about the studio’s timeline, especially since it was only founded in 2025.

Currently, the only glimpse we have of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is the reveal trailer from the Game Awards. Details about the setting and story remain scarce, but key insights from Hudson’s interview indicate that this game aims to be a long-awaited sequel to the original Knights of the Old Republic titles. Hudson stated, “Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

He also emphasized the mission of Arcanaut Studios, aiming to create emotionally impactful, cinematic adventures that prioritize player choice, narrative depth, and immersive world-building. Hudson highlighted the “fundamental pillars” of the KOTOR franchise, which include innovative storytelling, memorable characters, challenging gameplay, and a strong sense of agency within the Star Wars universe.

This suggests we can expect a character-driven RPG that closely mirrors the original Knights of the Old Republic, while possibly incorporating elements from the Mass Effect series, which Hudson also directed.

In addition to Hudson, several other notable former BioWare developers are contributing to Fate of the Old Republic. On Star Wars Day 2026, Hudson revealed more team members, including Pascal Blanché as the Art Director, who has previously worked on titles like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry: New Dawn.

While these developers have impressive resumes, they also have some less successful projects in their past, such as Mass Effect: Andromeda. So, while it’s encouraging to see experienced hands on this project, it’s wise to temper expectations.

Joining the team is Tony Elias, the Narrative Director, who previously worked at CD Projekt Red as a Senior Writer on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Elias has also contributed to games like Middle-earth: Shadow of War and Alan Wake, and even served as an editor for the underrated Lost Odyssey.

As we await more information and a gameplay reveal, it’s a good time to keep our excitement in check while looking forward to what promises to be an epic return to the Star Wars universe.
