Tips for Choosing the Best Horse in Ghost of Yotei

Choosing a horse in Ghost of Yotei can feel like a significant decision when the moment arrives. The warning that you’ll have this horse “forever” adds a layer of importance to your choice, but in reality, it just means you’re selecting the horse that will respond to your whistle for the rest of your adventure.

The opportunity to choose a horse may take some time to present itself, depending on how much you explore, as you’ll need to find the stables first. Once you reach this point, you’ll replace your starter horse with a permanent selection. If you’re curious about the implications of this choice, I can break it down for you.

If you need more guidance, our essential tips for Ghost of Yotei will help you navigate the game. And if you’re looking to boost your in-game currency, I can assist with that too.

In Ghost of Yotei, you receive a horse almost immediately after completing the initial encounter with The Snake. After that, you’re free to roam the Yotei Grasslands on a white horse. While you can ride other horses you encounter, your chosen horse will always come back to you when you whistle.

To the east of the starting area near Atsu’s childhood home lies a spot called Old Stables. Once you find it, you’ll embark on a short mission to defend the stable and its owner from outlaws. Completing this mission rewards you with a choice of three horses: a white, a black, or a dapple. You can also name your horse from three options: Shimaki (Tornado), Mochizuki (Full Moon), or Homura (Flame).

Rest assured, there’s no functional difference between the horses, so there’s no need to stress. This choice is purely cosmetic, as is the naming. Atsu will occasionally refer to your horse by the name you selected, and it will come to you when you whistle, but that’s the extent of it. Ultimately, it’s all about aesthetics. You can also customize the saddle design and color, which is another purely cosmetic choice.

Regardless of which horse you choose in Yotei, you might have noticed the black bars that appear while riding. Fortunately, these are just a visual effect, and you can easily disable them if you prefer.

Similar to Ghost of Tsushima, the Ghost of Yotei Digital Deluxe Edition (also included in the Collector’s Edition) offers an additional horse option. As before, this horse doesn’t provide any stat bonuses, but it will be available alongside the others. Based on what we’ve seen, it will be a brown horse—just like in Ghost of Tsushima.
