In Nioh 3, the best skills will depend on your personal build, but there are certain standout abilities that you should definitely prioritize. The game organizes its skill trees into two main categories: Samurai and Ninja, which are further divided into subcategories based on specific weapons like Swords, Spears, and Kusarigama. Here’s a broad overview of the skills you should focus on early in your journey through Nioh 3.

For most players, the essential skills to prioritize early on don’t require a specific build. Other abilities are tied to individual weapons or weapon types, so it’s best to select skills that complement the weapons you prefer. Aim for skills that you’ll use frequently, as some abilities can be situational and may not see much action. Fortunately, you can respec for free from the menu at any time, so experimenting isn’t a major concern.

You unlock Nioh 3 skills by collecting items known as Samurai’s Locks and Ninja’s Locks, each granting one skill point in their respective skill trees. These items can be found in various locations throughout the game.

Playing Nioh 3 will generally provide a consistent flow of Locks and skill points, regardless of the path you choose. Keep in mind that certain skills may be locked, even if you have the necessary points and have completed the preceding tree.

The skill descriptions will indicate any requirements needed, but some exploration may be necessary. For instance, high-level skills often require a specific Martial Arts Guide, which are typically dropped by Chijiko, hidden collectibles scattered throughout the game. However, the game doesn’t specify which Chijiko you need to find, so you’ll have to hunt them down.
