Understanding Food Digestion in Subnautica 2

Once you surface and start transforming your new underwater environment into a cozy home, your journey in Subnautica 2 encounters a hurdle: you can’t digest any of the local wildlife. No matter how many fish you catch and cook, they all come with warnings about “digestive incompatibility.” Thankfully, the game spares us the gory details of underwater indigestion, but you’ll need to tackle this issue to move forward.

A core concept in Subnautica 2 is the ability for genetic traits to transfer between species, enabling you to adapt local creatures’ characteristics to suit your human biology. Right at the beginning, you interact with a glowing pod to adjust to the surrounding pressure.

You’ll need to do this again to gain the digestive enzymes required to consume the unique flora and fauna in your vicinity.

If you happened to swim past that glowing purple-and-pink pod, thinking it was just part of the scenery or too risky to approach, you’re not alone. Those spiky angel wings can be quite off-putting, and in a survival crafting game, it’s easy to assume you’d need to craft a solution for your digestive woes. However, the fix is as simple as engaging with another magical goo-pod. Here’s what to look for:

Once you’ve adapted to the local food sources, you can finally start enjoying your meals. The small fish nearby, like the vibrant orange and neon-blue Halfmoon, are easy to catch by hand and can be cooked using your fabricator. You can also whip up an “oily salad” from fibrous pulp, which you can gather by slicing plants like the Whip Gorgon (those red shoots) with your Survival Multitool.

If you haven’t crafted the Multitool yet, you just need to gather 3 titanium, which can be found on the sea floor near your lifepod.
