Unlock Your First Armor in Gothic Remake for Free: Here’s How!

One of the most intriguing aspects of Gothic Remake is that you kick off your adventure as a down-and-out character with no gear, surrounded by folks eager to take advantage of you. Unlike most RPGs, you don’t even start with a basic weapon, meaning even the smallest creatures can take you down easily. Your immediate goal becomes figuring out how to acquire some armor after you manage to snag a sword.

I highly suggest tackling the Price of Magic quest early on to unlock magic, which significantly eases early combat, especially when you’re unarmored.

Armor acquisition is mainly linked to your faction progression within the three main camps or can be purchased from vendors—unlike weapons, you won’t find much armor while exploring. At the beginning, you’re stuck with the Nameless Hero’s plain black outfit, which isn’t even classified as an item. New gear sets are scarce, but you can obtain one for free not long after starting.

The first piece of armor you can get is the Digger’s Light Trousers, which you can buy from Fisk in the Old Camp marketplace for 313 ore. He’s the guy with short black hair dressed in the recognizable red Warder outfit. The Digger’s Light Trousers offer ten protection against edge and blunt attacks, plus five fire resistance, making it a solid upgrade from your basic black robes. I recommend hunting, stealing, and mining in the Old Mine to earn some quick cash early in the game. However, there’s a better option available in the Old Mine.

If you can hold off on spending your ore for a bit longer, head to the Old Mine in the northwest of The Colony, just around the hill to your left when you exit the New Camp. Near the bottom of the mine, you’ll find merchant Alberto chatting with Ian. Alberto sells the Digger’s Trousers for 324 ore, which is a slightly improved version of the armor that Fisk offers.

You can also snag the Digger’s Dress for free, which has the same stats as the Light Trousers. Just make your way to the Free Mine, accessible by passing through the New Camp in the hills on the west side of The Colony, and talk to Swiney, a digger near the entrance. If you’re feeling bold and can dodge the enemies, you could rush over here almost right away.

After this, your next set of armor will likely come from the faction you choose. Completing the Casting Shadows quest to join the Old Camp rewards you with the Shadow’s armor, which you can upgrade at merchants like Fisk as you rise in rank, such as becoming a Warder. Joining the New Camp will start you off with the Bandit’s Dress, while the Swamp Camp provides its own cultish Novice robes.
