Unlocking Base Building and Mastering the Habitat Builder in Subnautica 2

Building a base in a survival crafting game is usually straightforward, but in Subnautica 2, it can be a bit trickier than expected. To create your underwater habitat and escape the confines of the Life Pod, you’ll first need to acquire the Habitat Builder tool. This involves scanning two of these devices scattered across various locations on the map.

Once you have the Habitat Builder, you can set up your base wherever you like—just be mindful of the large aquatic predators lurking nearby. Below, I’ll guide you on where to find the two Habitat Builders and cover the essentials of base construction.

To start, you need to unlock the Habitat Builder by locating and scanning two of them in the game world. First, craft a Scanner using the “Personal” section of the Life Pod fabricator. For this, you’ll need to create a battery, which requires two copper and one Acidic Raion Pouch. After crafting the battery, head to the Welcome Center colony ruin located just southeast of the Life Pod, where you can find both Habitat Builders to scan. Their exact locations can be seen in the accompanying video.

You only need to scan two Habitat Builders to unlock the tool in the fabricator. Once unlocked, you can craft it using:

If you’re curious about the copper wire, you can also create it in the ‘Resources’ section, requiring two copper each.

Don’t forget to return to the Welcome Center later with a battery to unlock Biomods.

For your base, you’ll need titanium, quartz, and copper. Initially, you’ll only be able to build corridors, as rooms must be unlocked separately. Choose a base location that allows for expansion and is close to essential resources like titanium, copper, and fibrous pulp.

It’s also a good idea to build your base near a natural current, which will pull you in a direction when you swim into it. Later on, you’ll unlock the Hydroelectric Turbine, which can be placed in these currents for a more reliable power source compared to Solar Panels, which have diminished output at night. Just remember to connect them to your base using Power Transmitters.

Now, to construct your base:

The key is to install Solar Panels on the roof to provide power for your base and ensure a steady supply of oxygen. You can monitor your base’s power output and consumption at any time by getting close and checking the top left of your screen.
