Unlocking Spells in Gothic Remake: A Guide to Completing The Price of Magic

Magic plays a crucial role in Gothic Remake, especially in the early stages, where it significantly enhances your combat capabilities. This makes completing the Price of Magic quest in the Old Camp a smart move. Your task is to gather a few items for the mage Torrez, who will reward you with a valuable spell rune that allows you to cast spells permanently, as long as you have enough mana.

Completing this quest also grants you access to Torrez’s magical inventory, where you can buy additional spells, including one-time consumable scrolls, although these will be quite pricey at the start. Nevertheless, offensive magic can give you a serious edge, so here’s how to tackle the quest.

You’ll find Torrez in the southwest corner of the Old Camp, near the bustling market area draped in cloth. This is also where you’ll encounter Fisk, Dexter, and Mordrag. To reach him, simply:

After your chat, Torrez will suggest that you might have a knack for magic, but first, he needs you to fetch a few items:

Start by getting the parchment from Graham, the mapmaker, whose shack is just to the left of the north gate where you entered the Old Camp. He’s a straightforward fellow with a short black beard and a receding hairline, often found near his shack or by the cooking cauldron. The parchment will set you back 13 ore nuggets.

Next, for the Wolf’s Claws, you have a couple of choices. You can buy them from Mordrag, who is located near the market area. From Torrez, head through the market and look to your left to find him sitting on a bench outside a shack. Each claw costs seven ore nuggets, totaling 14.

However, there’s a way to snag these for free, even early in the game. If you need guidance, check out the video above, or follow these steps:

Wolves can be tough opponents at the beginning, especially without armor, but this method will help you collect the Wolf’s Claws without spending a dime. Once you have the materials, return to Torrez to complete the quest. You’ll then have the option to learn Rune Magic for five learning points.

Torrez will craft you a rune (a spell you can use permanently, unlike consumable scrolls) and give you a choice between fire bolt or healing. I recommend going with fire bolt, as it allows you to deal significant damage early on, while you can always heal by eating. This will also unlock Torrez’s shop, where you can purchase scrolls, runes, and mana potions, though they come at a steep price.

While resting will regenerate your mana, a quick and cheap method is to smoke swamp weed, which temporarily lowers your dexterity. You can buy this from vendors like Dexter in the market area (who might even offer you some for free), or you can get a daily ration from the Swamp Camp. Consider taking the Cult’s Recipe quest from Dexter to give you a reason to visit.

If you venture to the New Camp in the west of The Colony, you can also spend learning points to boost your overall mana with Cronos, the Water Mage, who is located in their headquarters at the back of the large settlement cave.
