Unlocking the Grappling Hook in Valheim: A Step-by-Step Guide
Valheim 1.0 brought significant changes to the Viking survival experience, but some things never change—like my knack for dying from fall damage in the Mistlands. Fortunately, a new item makes navigating those foggy marble mountains and steep cliffs easier, though I only discovered it when I was about to leave the biome. Let me help you avoid a similar fate with a quick guide on how to obtain the Grappling Hook in Valheim.
You can find Hooks in the Infested Mines, the Mistlands’ challenging dungeons filled with bugs that are just as tricky to explore as the rest of the area. After clearing several dungeons, I finally came across one with a hidden stone door that I almost overlooked, but the glowing blue glyphs caught my attention.
Inside, I found the Hooks in a Dvergr Treasure Chest alongside other valuable items like Black Cores. I later explored a few more dungeons and discovered a couple of stacks of three Hooks, but you only need one for crafting the Grappling Hook.
Getting the hang of the Grappling Hook takes a bit of practice, so try it out in a safe spot before relying on it in tight situations. Keep in mind that there’s a slight delay when loading the hook with your first left-click—that’s what trips me up when I’m in a rush to escape—after which you can aim and fire. Use the space key to reel yourself in with the chain, and right-click to release the hook.
There’s no real swinging involved; you just dangle until you reel yourself in, but that’s definitely better than plummeting to your death for the umpteenth time.
