In Avowed, upgrading your weapons and armor is crucial for enhancing your attack and defense. Since gear in Avowed doesn’t scale with your level, you can’t rely on that initial Common Dagger throughout the game. Without upgraded gear, enemies will shrug off damage from underpowered weapons and can take you down in just a few hits if your armor is weak. Early on, gathering the specific upgrade materials can be a challenge, but it becomes easier as you explore and discover more resources. Here’s everything you need to know about upgrading your gear in Avowed to help you thrive in the Living Lands.
To upgrade your weapons or armor, head to a workbench at a Party Camp, select the item you want to enhance, and spend the required materials from your inventory. This process boosts the item’s stats and rarity, with the material requirements increasing as the item’s quality improves. Keep an eye out for the shiny anvil icon next to items in your inventory, indicating you have the necessary materials for an upgrade. Since workbenches are only available at Party Camps, make sure to rest whenever upgrades are possible.
After selecting an item at a workbench, you can view its upgrade track, which shows the current quality tier. Avowed features four quality tiers:
Each tier is divided into four sub-tiers—like Common, Common +1, Common +2, and Common +3. This means you’ll need to upgrade a standard Common item 15 times to reach its maximum potential. Fortunately, rings, amulets, necklaces, boots, and gloves can’t be upgraded, so your focus will primarily be on weapons and body armor.
Avowed also includes Unique weapons and armor that come with special perks. These items can be obtained as quest rewards or looted from bosses, but many are hidden away, often revealed through treasure maps, such as the Avowed Intimidating Feline Codpiece map. Unique gear can be upgraded similarly to regular items, but you’ll need Adra to elevate them to the next quality tier (for example, from Common +3 to Fine). Unique gear also features a fifth quality tier known as Legendary (gold), making Legendary +3 the highest tier for any Unique item.
Upgrading any item requires the correct type and quality of upgrade materials. The materials needed for an upgrade are always listed below the upgrade track for each item.
Knowing where to find upgrade materials is essential for enhancing your weapons and armor in Avowed. Generally, you’ll gather the materials you need while progressing through the main quest and exploring new regions. However, if you find yourself running low, there are additional ways to acquire upgrade materials in Avowed.
