Major Update Enhances Xbox’s Top Feature in Years
The Xbox Series X/S may not have dominated this console generation, but it certainly earned a special place in my heart with its standout feature: Quick Resume. This innovative perk has become something I rely on just as much as fast load times. However, it does have a significant drawback, and Microsoft has recently announced that a fix is on the way.
Quick Resume allows you to suspend any game you’re playing while you switch to other apps or games. Over the years, the Xbox Series X/S has improved this feature, enabling multiple games to be suspended simultaneously. Unfortunately, not all titles play nicely with this functionality.
While it works wonders for single-player experiences, always-online and multiplayer games often encounter issues when resuming from sleep mode. Players can find themselves stuck in frustrating login error loops or facing other unpredictable glitches. For games like Minecraft, it’s often more effective to save your progress, quit, and restart rather than rely on Quick Resume.
The upcoming update will introduce the ability to toggle Quick Resume on a per-game basis. According to a recent blog post, “Quick Resume is one of the most loved features on Xbox, but we’ve heard that for certain games it doesn’t always deliver the experience you expect, especially after long periods of inactivity. With this update, you can disable Quick Resume on a per-game basis to ensure those games always launch fresh.”
This feature is currently available for Xbox Insiders to test, alongside a range of other updates. These include an increased number of Groups for organizing games on the home menu, customizable background colors, and more visible achievement badges. The enhanced Quick Resume and other features will eventually be rolled out to all users.
Microsoft continues to refine the Xbox dashboard experience, even as it shifts focus away from hardware exclusives. It will be interesting to see how these advancements translate to the company’s next-gen PC-based product, Project Helix, as we approach its anticipated 2027 release.
