It’s been four years since Austin Butler portrayed the king of rock and roll in Elvis, earning an Oscar nomination for his performance. Now, he’s set to take on the role of Lance Armstrong in an upcoming biopic. This untitled project will be directed by Edward Berger, known for All Quiet on the Western Front, with a script by Zach Baylin, who wrote King Richard.
Reports indicate that Butler is in final negotiations to portray Armstrong, whose remarkable cycling career was marred by an investigation that confirmed he used performance-enhancing drugs. This scandal led to Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and receiving a lifetime ban from competitive cycling.
The rights to Armstrong’s life story have been acquired by Scott Stuber, a former Netflix film executive, who is producing the film. This has sparked a bidding war among studios eager to secure the project. Interestingly, the biopic was already in development before Stuber signed a first-look deal with United Artists, meaning the Amazon-owned studio could potentially place a bid, though it may not be the winning one.
This project adds to Butler’s impressive lineup, which also includes a remake of American Psycho and a potential role in Heat 2, directed by Michael Mann. Additionally, Butler is set to collaborate with Michael B. Jordan on a new film adaptation of Miami Vice, directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick.
